Technology has always been a motor for the art of filmmaking. It has given a voice to silent films, color to the classics and a universe of visual effects to blockbusters. What are today the possibilities if we let the most talented and creative technical minds experiment at a film school?

Not only requires the process of filmmaking innovative technologies, but there is also the need for novel artistic expressions within the constantly growing field of audio-visual media. There lie unique and unheard-of forms of story telling in the variety of interactions techniques, with the displays of all sizes and mobility and with technologies such as augmented and virtual reality.

The Film University enters the future with its technical-interdisciplinary Master program ‘Audio-Visual Application Design’. The program widens the topic of filmmaking to the whole spectrum of audio-visual media. This allows for a technical-artistic-creative exploration from all point of views. The objective remains to tell a story and the immersion of an audience. However, technology in itself becomes through intelligent and artistic application an aesthetic mean and a creative experience for the audience. New media theorist Lev Manovich goes as far as predicting: “19th century culture was defined by the novel, 20th century culture by cinema, and the culture of the 21st century will be defined by the interface.”

The Master program ‘Audio-Visual Application Design’ aims for graduates of a media technology program who are also interested in creative-artistic work, multidisciplinarity and film.

The goal of the program is to teach, to apply and to further develop technical expertise for audio-visual media productions with a holistic and innovative approach.

The spectrum of topics ranges from the technical-formal to the artistic-creative in theory and practice. In the first part of the program lectures and projects build a broad foundation of knowledge in technical and artistic topics. In the second part, advanced exercises and projects offer the development of an individually chosen specialization and deepening of specific knowledge. Topics in regard to films as audio-visual medium are especially suitable as specialization field as the program is part of a film school.  There are a variety of common courses and projects with other programs of the school. Innovative technologies can be learned, applied and developed as part of a traditional film production process. Furthermore, being inspired by technical expertise, students can develop novel artistic approaches and express their own artistic creativity. At all times the current state of the art in the research community is considered and academic methodologies enforced, leading to a unique combination of intellectual and practical expertise.

The ultra-modern technical infrastructure and equipment for media productions, as well as the large community of creatives at the Film University, give students an exclusive opportunity to bring their ideas to life on a professional level. With this they are building reference work and a strong network as first steps of their successful careers.

Career Opportunities

Students who successfully complete the ‘Audio-Visual Application Design’ Master program are competent personalities who understand the bigger picture and who are able to communicate multidisciplinary. Not only the entertainment business is dominated by novel technologies but our everyday life and the demand for experts that are building bridges between users and technology rises constantly.

The career opportunities for AVAD graduates range from software development, over the creative-technical development, the counseling for, and the supervision of media productions to management positions. Specific occupations derive from the individually chosen specialty of the graduate and industries include film- and postproductions, animation studios, advertising agencies, interactive media productions and scenic installation productions for example including projection techniques. Depending on the distinct capabilities of a student, the program also prepares for a career as media artist or as research scientist.
