Stollen - Director: Laura Reichwald

Director: Laura Reichwald - 2020 - Neue Celluloid Fabrik, MDR, MDM - 85 Min.

STOLLEN is a modern portrait of the Erzgebirge, a mountainous region in Eastern Germany, forever shaped by centuries of mining. The documentary film accompanies a group of locals during their preparations for Christmas, 30 years since the closing of the last uranium mines, as they negotiate the character of their identity in between tradition and economic needs.

“I’m interested in the microcosm of small towns, which display universal themes in a concentrated fashion. STOLLEN portrays life in a small mining town, located in the mountainous Erzgebirge, during 2019. There, global matters such as raw materials policy meet local history and tradition in daily discussion. Conversation gets especially lively around topics like Home and Tradition, words so complex that they mean something different to everyone, nevertheless playing a central role in their lives.” - Laura Reichwald
