Anna Luise Kiss worked as an actress for several years (e.g., in the ARD series "Um Himmels Willen" (2001-2007)) before she started studying Cultural Sciences. Simultaneously, she did internships at, among others, the dramaturgy department of the Berlin State Opera and ZDF, where filled in for the assistant editor in the TV film department. In 2010, Kiss completed her B.A. program with a thesis on visuality in Günter Grass's novel "Die Blechtrommel" and its film adaptation. For her thesis, she was awarded a Young Talent Grant from FernUniversität Hagen. Subsequently, she studied Media Studies at HFF Konrad Wolf and received a Brandenburg State Graduate Award for her M.A. thesis in 2013. She has been working as an assistant to Prof. Dr. Michael Wedel since 2012 and is currently writing her PhD thesis on amateur acting in feature films.

In 2014, Kiss created the "Hands-on Herrmann Zschoche" research and teaching seminar, which aimed at presenting and reviewing the works of one of DEFA's most successful directors. In collaboration with students of the film university, Zschoche's films, their creation, and the censorship problems they encountered were presented in a foyer exhibition at Filmmuseum Potsdam and an accompanying retrospective. A short film and the collected volume "Jede Menge Perspektiven. Der Regisseur Herrmann Zschoche" (edited by Anna Luise Kiss) complemented the work of the students and provided further insights into the life and films of director Herrmann Zschoche. In 2015, Kiss received the Brandenburg State Teaching Award for her seminar. In 2016, Kiss teamed up with photographer, cinematographer, and author Dieter Chill to conduct research on DEFA's first female still photographer Waltraut Pathenheimer. The collaboration resulted in the book "Pathenheimer: Filmfotografin. DEFA Movie Stills" (edited by Dieter Chill and Anna Luise Kiss) as well as an exhibition at the Brandenburg Center for Media Studies (ZeM).
