At the EVZ Foundation HISTODAY conference in Berlin in early May 2026, Björn Stockleben and Martin Gordon presented the VR reconstruction of the Auschwitz laundry as an example of the potential role of generative AI in the culture of remembrance, democracy and historical-political responsibility. Addressing the topic of Innovation, Ethics and Education within the domain of Holocaust Remembrance, the presentation led to a discussion upon the ethics of the use of generative AI, with the underlying elements of the VR reconstruction serving as examples of an emerging adaptive ethical framework.
The VR reconstruction of the Auschwitz laundry takes place partly within the EU Horizon-funded IMPULSE project, and such an ethical framework will be part of the project's Deliverables. More information via the project website: https://euimpulse.euhttps://euimpulse.eu.
