In absentia

A digital field study of the digital representation of the Earth, which examines the simulated space for the absence of people and attempts to generate a novel narrative experiential space through artistic means.

We live in a world increasingly influenced by digital spaces. Terms like meatspace (versus cyberspace) suggest the existence of these two parallel worlds. In absentia explores the tension between simulation and reality – can we still truly speak of a dialectical separation between the physical and virtual worlds? How do these two worlds interact, and what happens when one studies the blurred line between them? Isn't our understanding of what we call reality merely a projection of our perception? The project examines the concept of digital representation using Google Earth as an example. On a journey through unreal spaces, different locations will be visited, documented, and subsequently reflected upon in a short audiovisual experiment through the montage of digital archive material.
