Tirza Seene: Anti-Semitism and Film - History and Reception. A Proposal for the study of a complex interrelationship.

The research project aims to structure the field of anti-Semitism and film. In doing so, it will not focus on representations of Jews, but rather on discourses about film.

Project start:
2020
Project completion:
2023

While anti-Semitic representations in film have already received a great deal of attention in research, an investigation of the abstract relationship between anti-Semitism and film has yet to be conducted. The central concern of the dissertation project is to compile and classify the disparate research approaches in the field in order to structure the complex. To this end, a typology of the research literature on anti-Semitism and film will be developed, taking into account the respective disciplinary locations and understandings of anti-Semitism.

In doing so, the dissertation project proposes to focus on discourses about film. Focussing on the processes of debates on anti-Semitism and film does justice to the dynamics of anti-Semitism and simultaneously makes the uncovering of discursive shifts possible.Which patterns of argumentation are usedin discussions about anti-Semitism and film and which function is attributed to anti-Semitism in each case? Applying this framework of questions on different debates can uncover their respective contextual as well as structural patterns and thus bring to light differences or commonalities in the discourses.
