National Funding

Germany has a diverse funding landscape for scientific research. The two main players are the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which pursue complementary strategies: While the DFG's approach focuses on basic research, the BMBF's programmes are more oriented towards societal goals and applications. There are also a large number of other foundations and institutions whose support can be used to carry out projects funded by third parties. Funding opportunities for artistic research are less well developed; we are happy to assist you in your search.

The main tools for researching funding opportunities are the Federal Funding Database, the Index of German Foundations and the Elfi portal (restricted access).
