Facilities & Infrastructure
In 1999/2000, a new university building with a floor space of 10,285 sqm was constructed in the media city of Babelsberg. Setting new standards, the building provides everything students could wish for when making a film. From dramaturgy to SFX finish, all the technology needed for professional filmmaking is available under a single roof, much like in a full-service studio. Currently, the main university building consists of five separate buildings linked by glass-roofed atria. The "Flyer", an impressive meeting room, is located on the rooftop of the building. In good weather, you can see the Berlin Television Tower, the Berlin Radio Tower, or Potsdam's Nikolaikirche from up here. Growing student numbers and new degree programs necessitate a further extension of the university building. The school's new "Haus 6" is currently under construction and scheduled to be ready for use in 2019. The building will accomodate a canteen with a fully equipped kitchen and room for 100 people. Besides, it will provide space for events, offices, and seminar rooms as well as specific facilities for the Sound, Film Music, Editing, Acting, Animation, and Set Design degree programs. A bridge will connect the extension to the existing building. "Haus 7" – a rented building located close to the university on the premises of Studio Babelsberg – is already in use and houses the Research Funding and the Knowledge and Technology Transfer departments as well as the IKF (Institute for Artistic Research), the Startup Center, and the Creative Technologies program.
For studying and film production activities, the main building of the Film University is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Regular office and course hours are from 7 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday.
