Transnational Initiative

The Transnational Media Research Initiative at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF brings together projects that that explore and analyze the flows of media across borders.
This interdisciplinary initiative invites researchers—including academics, graduate students, and industry professionals—to participate in ongoing discussions that deepen our understanding of transnational media flows. It addresses the dynamics of circulation and distribution, platform specifics and platformization, audience demographics and practices, production practices and conditions, as well as issues of national, transnational or supra-national regulations.
Within the framework of globalization, localization, and digitalization the Transnational Media Research Initiative considers geopolitical contexts, geo-linguistic groupings, and socio-cultural nuances. Technological advancements, structural changes, de-territorialization, and conglomeration are key factors driving transnational media flows, shaping both access to media products and consumption patterns. These factors also impact the production and interpretation of media narratives, including stories and news.
By connecting research on a wide array of transnational trends, the initiative fosters and facilitates diverse discussions. It encourages exploration of issues at the intersections of race and ethnicity, gender identity and sexual politics, national identity and nationalism, transnational storytelling, media activism, content adaptation across different regions, and the experiences of transnational, global, or diasporic audiences. The initiative also addresses various media genres, platforms, and the global dynamics of creative industries.
