Jonas Martelli: Migrant Cinema and Television in Germany and Italy from 1990: A Comparative Study on How the Two National Film and TV Industries Represented Migrant Communities living in their Countries

The research project aims to investigate how the German and Italian film and television industries developed their approach on the representation of people of second generation.

Project start:
2023
Project completion:
2026

The doctoral project focuses on how in Germany and Italy the representation of people with migrant background in the film and television industries of both countries starting from 1990.
The research will investigate how two countries that share several aspects in their approach in migration developed a different one in representing people with migrant background in films and TV series. Germany developed an industry where several filmmakers of second generation were able to tell their stories from their point of view, while similar cases in Italy are rare, and migrant stories are mostly told by Italian filmmakers who don’t have a migration background.

The research will collect and analyse films and TV series produced in Germany and Italy that were produced since 1990, while also studying both the production process, by conducting interviews with filmmakers, and the reception of these titles, through the collection and analysis of reviews and articles. It will investigate how the industries as a whole worked to include 2G filmmakers in the production process, and how 2G audiences in Germany and Italy view the these titles.
