Application

All applicants must apply online. Please use the Film University's application portal for this purpose.

ATTENTION! Shortly before the application deadline, server problems and delays in the online application process may occur due to many (last minute) applications. So do not wait until the last day of the deadline! Applications and late submissions after the application deadline will not be accepted!

ATTENTION! You should have prepared all the required files before registering in the university application portal.

Please note:

• Applications in paper form will NOT be considered.
• Registration/application in the university application portal is exclusively possible during the application period. Please note that the application deadline is a cut-off deadline.
• An administrative fee is charged for the application. Applications for which the administrative fee has not been remitted will not be considered for the assessment procedure.
• Incomplete applications will not be considered for the assessment procedure.
• You can track the processing status of your application in the university application portal. Please refrain from making inquiries by telephone.

• Curriculum vitae in table form (PDF)
• Reason for choice of study (this means a text on the motivation why you want to be a film director, revealing your specific viewpoint and attitude towards the world; maximum 2 pages A4)
• Proof of practical work experience (PDF)

If you have acquired your university entrance qualification in Germany, please inform yourself about the required proof in the paragraph 'German Certificate’. If you have acquired your university entrance qualification outside Germany, please inform yourself about the required documents you must submit under ‘Foreign Certificate’.

For the B.A. program Directing the regulations of Section 9 para. 2-4 BbgHG (Brandenburg Higher Education Act) apply.

German Certificate:

Please submit your university entrance qualification (PDF) with your application, usually:

• General university entrance qualification (Abitur) or subject-specific university entrance qualification
• General or subject-specific entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences
• Other university entrance qualifications as per Section 9 para. 2 BbgHG (Brandenburg Higher Education Act)
• Applicants who do not hold any of the aforementioned qualifications or an equivalent qualification are requested to submit their most recent school report (PDF)

Foreign Certificate:

If you obtained your university entrance qualification or first academic degree abroad, please submit the university entrance qualification/school leaving certificate (PDF).

Please note:

• Special regulations apply to applicants from the Republic of India, the People's Republic of China and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, please inform yourself.

If you obtained your university entrance qualification at a non-German-speaking institution and do not hold German citizenship, you must provide evidence of sufficient German language proficiency at least at the DSH-1 level or an equivalent language certificate according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Please upload this with the other application files in the university application portal.

The recognized language examinations for the Bachelor program Directing are detailed here.

Please note:

If you do not have a language certificate for the level required by the degree program by the application deadline, please  inform yourself here.

• Proof of practical work experience (pdf) of at least 12 weeks* at the time of application in the form of certificates or references from the respective companies, stating the type, scope and quality of the work. The practical professional experience must be provided by film or directing-related practical experience in film, TV, series, theater or in the media-artistic field (e.g. as an assistant director, intern at the theater, experience at open channels, regional broadcasters, media education projects)
• In the case of practical experience as an actor, a maximum of 4 weeks can be credited. School internships, training, studies and own film work are excluded.
• Tabular list of practical professional experience (form) (pdf)

*In exceptional cases, 4 weeks of work-related practical experience can be made up until the start of the course.

The following work samples must be uploaded to the application portal:

• An own film work of a documentary or fictional nature, realized under your own directorial responsibility, with a maximum total length of 10 minutes. This can be a film or an excerpt/excerpts from a longer film (showreels are not permitted).
• The film submission must be accompanied by an information sheet with details of the title, length, short content ("three-liner"), details of excerpt(s) if applicable, year of production. In addition, a staff list with exact names of all departments and protagonists/actors.
• A short synopsis for a short film or a short TV/Internet format of a documentary or fictional nature, in which your personal approach to the material becomes clear. (no more than 1 page A4). This synopsis must not resemble the content of the application film.
• A documentary photo series consisting of 7 self-made photos (max. size A4) on a topic of your choice.

The restrictions specified by the application portal apply. Video files must be playable in current browsers without additional software/codecs.

Based on the materials submitted, the admissions committee will decide which applicants will receive permission to take the admission test and inform them in writing. 

The (one-week) admission test will be conducted during May / June.

 Practical / Creative Assignment:

• Creation of a documentary sequence with a video camera
• Filming of an acting sequence
• Test of the applicant's ability to concentrate, capacity for teamwork, power of observation, sense of rhythm, and ability to direct actors

Written Assignment:

• Filmic adaptation of a literary text

Interview:

• Interview on the applicant's artistic and personal profile.

The result of the eligibility assessment will be communicated in writing no later than 4 weeks after the last part of the assessment.
