Application

All applicants must submit their application online via the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF admissions portal. Please first register on the admissions portal and then submit your application there.

Note: Please have all required documents and files ready before beginning the application process.

ATTENTION! Shortly before the application deadline, server issues and delays in the online application process may occur due to a large number of (last-minute) applications. So don’t wait until the very last day of the deadline! Applications and supplementary documents submitted after the application deadline will not be accepted!

Please note:

• Applications in paper form will NOT be considered.
• Registration/application in the university application portal is exclusively possible during the application period. Please note that the application deadline is a cut-off deadline.
• An administrative fee is charged for the application. Applications for which the administrative fee has not been remitted will not be considered for the assessment procedure.
• Do not include any links with your application. For security reasons, we are not permitted to open external links; therefore, their content cannot be taken into consideration.
• Incomplete applications will not be considered for the assessment procedure.
• You can track the processing status of your application in the university application portal. Please refrain from making inquiries by telephone.

If you have acquired your university entrance qualification in Germany, please inform yourself about the required proof in the paragraph 'German Certificate’. If you have acquired your university entrance qualification outside Germany, please inform yourself about the required documents you must submit under ‘Foreign Certificate’.

For the B.A. program Directing the regulations of Section 10 para. 2-4 BbgHG (Brandenburg Higher Education Act) apply.

German Certificate:

Please submit your university entrance qualification (PDF) with your application, usually:

• General university entrance qualification (Abitur) or subject-specific university entrance qualification
• General or subject-specific entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences
• Other university entrance qualifications as per Section 10 para. 2 BbgHG (Brandenburg Higher Education Act)
• Applicants who do not hold any of the aforementioned qualifications or an equivalent qualification are requested to submit their most recent school report (PDF)

Foreign Certificate:

If you obtained your university entrance qualification or first academic degree abroad, please submit the university entrance qualification/school leaving certificate (PDF).

Please note:

• Special regulations apply to applicants from the Republic of India, the People's Republic of China and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, please inform yourself.

If you obtained your university entrance qualification at a non-German-speaking institution and do not hold German citizenship, you must provide evidence of sufficient German language proficiency at least at the DSH-1 level or an equivalent language certificate according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Please upload this with the other application files in the university application portal.

The recognized language examinations for the Bachelor program Directing are detailed here.

• Proof of professional work experience (PDF) totaling at least 12 weeks at the time of application, in the form of certificates or letters of reference from the respective companies or organizations, detailing the nature, scope, and quality of the work performed.
  The professional work experience must consist of activities related to directing in the fields of film, television, series, online media, theater, or media arts, specifically, for example, as a theater intern,  an intern/volunteer at a broadcast station, a production or editorial assistant at a production company or broadcast station, an extras coordinator, a script supervisor, an assistant director, or a production manager.
  
  Up to six weeks of the required practical experience may be credited toward the requirement based on work as an actor, training in technical-creative fields (e.g., media designer), or artistic-creative degree programs already completed (e.g., at a film or art college).

  Activities related to directing in student productions are recognized.

  High school internships and personal film projects do not count toward the requirement!

The following work samples must be uploaded to the application portal:

For the “Nonfiction & Hybrid” specialization:

• A documentary photo series consisting of 7 images you have photographed yourself on a topic of your choice.
• A nonfiction or hybrid film project that you directed yourself (maximum total length of 10 minutes). This may be a full-length film or an excerpt(s) from a longer film (showreels or trailers are not permitted).
• The film submission must be accompanied by an information sheet including the title, length, a brief synopsis, details regarding the excerpt(s) (if applicable), and the year of production. In addition, a credits list must be provided, specifying all departments and protagonists or actors (maximum 1 A4 page). In the case of co-direction, a list must also be provided detailing the specific contributions made by the applicant.
• An exposé for a nonfiction or hybrid short film (up to a maximum of 30 minutes in length) or a short online or serial format of a nonfiction or hybrid nature, in which the applicant’s personal approach to the subject matter is also clearly articulated (maximum of 1 A4 page). The content of the exposé must be distinct from that of the submitted film.
   

For the “Fictional & Hybrid” specialization:

• A documentary photo series consisting of 7 independently photographed images on a topic of your choice.
• A fictional or hybrid film project that you directed yourself (maximum total length of 10 minutes). This may be a full-length film or an excerpt(s) from a longer film (showreels or trailers are not permitted).
• The film submission must be accompanied by an information sheet including the title, length, a brief synopsis, details regarding the excerpt(s) (if applicable), and the year of production. In addition, a credits list must be provided, specifying all departments and protagonists or actors (maximum 1 A4 page). In the case of co-direction, a list must also be provided detailing the specific contributions made by the applicant.
• An exposé for a fictional or hybrid short film (up to a maximum of 30 minutes in length) or a short online or serial format of a fictional or hybrid nature, in which the applicant’s personal approach to the material is also clearly articulated (maximum of 1 A4 page). The restrictions specified by the application portal apply. Video files must be playable in current browsers without additional software/codecs.

Based on the materials submitted, the admissions committee will decide which applicants will receive permission to take the admission test and inform them in writing. 

The entrance exam (1 week) takes place in May/June and consists of the following parts for all applicants, regardless of their chosen specialization:

Practical/artistic portion:

• Creation of a non-fiction sequence on a given topic
• Creation of a fiction sequence on a given topic

Written portion:

• Writing exercise on a given topic

Oral component:

• Discussion of the submitted materials and the applicant’s artistic and personal profile
• Pitch of a film idea for the graduation film

The result of the eligibility assessment will be communicated in writing no later than 4 weeks after the last part of the assessment.
